Hello
This is the personal portfolio of Wayne Trevor Townsend. Better known as Trev.

I graduated from Staffordshire
University in July 2007 with a 1st Class degree BA(Hons) in Graphic Design.

I am now learning my trade at Turquoise, based in London where I have been since January 2008 working with some very talented people and working on some very exciting brands.

Before I started at Turquoise I spent 6 months doing placements at Love, Unreal, Bloom, Smith & Milton and Big Fish. I also like to keep busy with my own projects and the odd freelance job that comes my way.

Wood World Missions / Malawi
In December 2008 I was invited out to Malawi by the founders of Wood World Missions (A charity I support) for the opening of their international education centre for around 250 orphans who have been looked after by the charity for the last 6 years.

Wood World Mission supports various projects around the world – but for this project they are building a School which will educate hundreds of children and also provide permanent protective living quarters for 43 girls from the rural villages who have been subjected to rape and other assaults.

It was an amazing experience. One which led me to getting in the national newspaper, meeting the vice president, painting hundreds of desks, taking over 3,000 photographs and being chased by hundreds of excited children shouting “Mazungu Trevor” (Chichewa for “white man Trevor”).

Aleshia Morrison identity
I designed an identity and business cards for Aleshia Morrison, a fine art graduate and exhibition assistant.

The idea was to keep the mark clean and simple so it didn’t interfere with Aleshia’s art.

Slide 3 shows a close up of Aleshia’s
creative splashings so check it out.

Art competition
The brief: Anything goes.

Turquoise set a competition brief for
all the designers to create something interesting to go on the studio wall.

I was quite pleased with my efforts, although I didn’t win.

Arch awaewness campaign
The brief was to raise awareness of the fact there is over 1400 homeless people on the streets of Staffordshire.

I created a series of posters that play on the idea of current TV programmes, highlighting the reality of homelessness in the area.

Helvetic ‘NOW’ poster contest
This was a competition brief set by
Linotype, ‘Helvetica Now poster contest’. The competition was all about
celebrating the 50th birthday of the Helvetica typeface.

I ended up creating more of a mark than a poster by linking the ‘H’ and ‘50’ to create a mark that read ‘Helvetica
at 50’.

Metro Imaging

Metro Imaging are a well known photography developing company based in London.

Due to the rise in popularity of digital photography I thought it would be
a cool idea to create a series of ads that would feature in magazines such as Creative Review or Black &White and would then identify Metro’s bespoke printing service.

Typographic Circle
Posters to promote a Typographic Circle event. Type obsessed Birmingham, London and Manchester.

I created a set of double sided posters that promoted three talks celebrating 31 years of the Typographic Circle.

For this I really became obsessed myself with the number 31, everything seemed to be 31, when I checked the time it would always be 31 minutes past. I had a trip to New York, my seat was 31A, all these things kept happening which made this project so much more interesting for me.

I made my dinner into the numbers 31. When feeding the ducks I set the bread out in the shape of 31. Sad but worth it.

Al Ittihad FC
Proposed badge for Al Ittihad FC.

A great project came into the studio, one which I think all the creatives got involved and had a chance to create a badge.

The team is nick-named ‘The Tigers’
and their badge at the time was
understandably heavily influenced by tigers but for one of my routes I wanted to stay clear of that and do something contemporary, different and cool.

This project was created under the art direction of Turquoise Branding.

ST. Edwards Asylum Museum
The brief was to take a neglected building, research into it’s history and give it some purpose.

After researching into what was an
old Asylum and finding out some of the crazy things that took place there the idea was to make it into a museum and design the identity, signage and poster promotion material.

D&AD 2007 Shelter competition
D&AD brief: Create an outdoor campaign to reposition Shelter by raising awareness of the diversity of its work.

You either help yourself or go to Shelter
and get help from them. Shelter is a charity that provides much more than blankets and soup. It’s not just a charity for homeless people but one that covers almost everything concerning housing.

Got a housing problem?
Sort it out at www.shelter.org.uk.

Howard Smith paper competition
The brief: Black is white, explore.

Competition brief set by Howard
Smith Paper.

The concept: Black gives white it’s
identity, without black, white is nothing. I demonstrated this idea by using a newspaper, something that is used daily and would be most effected.

Self promotion
This was my self promotion when I was leaving Staffordshire University.

The concept was based around the
idea of ‘A thirst for knowledge’.

I wanted to do something fun to send
out to some design agencies to see
what kind of reaction it got. It went down really well at most agencies and got me some great placements.

For and against
The brief: ‘On the other hand’. After researching into my chosen subject of animal testing, I then had to solve it from both a positive and negative
view point.

and honest.

EWA
The brief: Design a new identity and brochure for Ellis Williams Architects.

For this project I photographed some 3D letters and used the shadow to create the mark. The photography within the brochure is focused only on the shadows which again related back
to the idea that buildings are three
dimensional and create shadows.

Brief set by Love.
